Versus Head-to-head

# Fastmail vs Google Workspace

This is really a question about what you're buying: Fastmail sells excellent email, calendars, and contacts; Google Workspace sells an office suite that happens to include email. Prices below were verified on both vendors' pricing pages in September 2026.

Summary verdict

## Short answer

Pick Fastmail if what you actually need is first-class email on your own domain: that's the Standard plan at $5/user/mo billed annually (the $3 Basic tier is @fastmail.com addresses only — custom domains start at Standard), there's no intro-discount-then-renewal-jump game, and the product is built by an independent company that charges you instead of profiling you. Pick Google Workspace ($7/user/mo Business Starter) when your team genuinely lives in Docs, Drive, and Meet — you're buying the suite, and as email-plus-suite it's fairly priced.

## Pricing, decoded (verified September 2026)

The Fastmail plan that actually matches Workspace is Standard at $5/user/mo billed annually ($6 billed monthly): the entry Basic tier ($3/user/mo) excludes custom domains and third-party IMAP clients, so business email on your own domain starts at Standard. Longer 24- or 36-month terms get slightly cheaper, and there is no first-year discount — the renewal price is the entry price, which makes multi-year budgeting boring in the best way.

Google Workspace Business Starter lists at $7/user/mo on an annual commitment. Google periodically runs aggressive first-year promotions for new customers (a 50%-off-three-months offer was live when we checked in September 2026) — take the discount if offered, but budget at the standard $7 rate, because that's what renewal costs.

For a five-person team over three years at standard rates: Fastmail Standard ≈ $900; Workspace Starter ≈ $1,260. The $360 difference is what the suite costs — worth every cent if you use it, pure waste if you only ever open Gmail.

## What each does better

Fastmail: genuinely fast webmail and apps, masked email addresses for signups, straightforward custom-domain setup, full CalDAV/CardDAV standards support, and a privacy posture funded by subscriptions rather than advertising.

Google Workspace: the collaboration layer (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet), enormous third-party integration surface, mature admin controls and device management, and Gmail's spam filtering, which remains the industry reference point.

Deliverability is excellent from both when SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are configured correctly — we would not choose between them on deliverability grounds.

## The hybrid pattern nobody mentions

Per-seat pricing means you don't have to pick one company-wide. A common pattern for small teams: Workspace seats for the people who live in Docs and client meetings, Fastmail (or a flat-fee host like MXroute) for role accounts, contractors, and archival domains. Inbound mail for a single domain has to route to one provider, but multi-domain businesses can and do split.

### Best fit for

- + Solo founders and small teams putting email on a custom domain
- + Anyone de-Googling their business without losing polish
- + Teams auditing per-seat software spend

### Consider another option if

- − Your team collaborates in Google Docs/Sheets daily — stay with Workspace
- − You need Google Meet, shared Drives, or Workspace's admin/compliance tooling
- − You want the absolute cheapest option — see our MXroute vs Migadu comparison instead

Questions readers ask

## FAQ

Yes, at standard rates — $5/user/mo for Fastmail Standard (the cheapest plan with custom domains, billed annually) vs $7/user/mo for Business Starter as of September 2026. Google's periodic first-year promos can temporarily invert that; compare at renewal rates, not promo rates.
