“Team of 5” is the ongoing yearly cost for five mailboxes at the renewal price, not the intro price. Flat-fee plans cover five mailboxes for the plan price; per-user plans are 5 × 12 × the per-user monthly rate. Migadu Micro’s 20-outbound-messages/day cap applies to the whole account, and Faivelo’s flat price covers unlimited mailboxes, so its five-mailbox figure is simply the plan price. Mailboxes bundled with hosting plans (IONOS, GoDaddy, Spaceship) are left out on purpose: they end when the hosting plan does.
The real price ladder (verified September 2026)
$0: Zoho Mail Free — up to 5 users, 5 GB per user, one custom domain, re-verified on Zoho's site in September 2026. The catch that matters: the free plan is webmail and mobile-app only, with no IMAP or POP access, so it won't connect to Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook. Fine as a starter; plan to outgrow it (the paid Mail Lite tier at $1/user/mo billed annually is the natural next rung and adds IMAP).
$19/yr: Migadu Micro — unlimited domains and unlimited addresses, 5 GB pooled storage, and a hard cap of 20 outbound messages per day. Migadu bills for capacity, not seats, and publishes every limit like a terms sheet. Receiving-heavy use across many domains is its sweet spot.
$59/yr: MXroute Small — 10 GB, unlimited domains and mailboxes, no per-day sending micro-caps at normal business volume, and a renewal price that equals the entry price. This is where 'cheap' stops carrying asterisks.
$60/user/yr: Fastmail Standard at $5/user/mo billed annually is the cheapest per-seat option with polished apps AND your own domain — the right kind of cheap for a one- or two-person business that values the client experience. (Fastmail's $3 Basic tier exists, but it's @fastmail.com addresses only, with no custom domains or third-party IMAP clients — it doesn't belong on a business-email ladder.)
What cheap email hosting costs you
Limits are the product. Migadu's outbound cap and Zoho's protocol lock aren't fine print to be outraged about — they're how these prices are possible. The failure mode is picking a capped plan for an uncapped workload: a business inbox that sends forty messages a day does not belong on Migadu Micro.
Support at this price is self-serve and queue-based everywhere. Documentation quality becomes the real support channel, and both Migadu and MXroute document unusually well.
What you don't give up: deliverability fundamentals. All four providers support proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records, which matter more than the logo on the mailbox.
The bundled-email trap
Most shared web hosts include 'free' email with hosting plans. It works until the day you change hosts — then your mailboxes are hostage to a migration they were never designed for. Keeping email on a dedicated provider, even a $19/yr one, decouples the two decisions permanently. It's the same logic as keeping your domain registrar separate from your host.
